Abstract
1,140,116. Treating graft polymer dispersions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 17 Aug., 1966, No. 36847/66. Heading C3G. Granular particles of a graft polymer with a backbone comprising a polymer of a monoolefinic non-aromatic hydrocarbon containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms per molecule are produced by distillation of organic solvent from a mixture of water and either a dispersion of the solvated graft polymer in an organic medium, or a solution of the graft polymer in an organic medium, until the organic solvent: polymer ratio is from 2: 1 to 3: 1 by weight, followed by agitation of the dispersion to disperse the organic material in the water in a substantially uniform manner wherein each of the droplets of organic material contains the quantity of graft polymer desired in the final granules, and subsequent removal of organic solvent until the ratio of organic solvent: polymer is less than 2:1, while maintaining agitation. Specified backbone polymers are polymers of ethylene, propylene and butylene and copolymers thereof. In an example a toluene solution of polyethylene, previously subjected to radiation from a Co<SP>60</SP> source, is mixed with acrylic acid and heated. Water is added to the resulting graft polymer solution and granules 0.2 mm. in diameter are produced by azeotropic distillation of the toluene. A dispersion of a polypropylene-acrylic acid graft polymer may be similarly treated.
