Abstract

1,139,526. Jointing by rolling; making composite sheets. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 16 May, 1966, No. 21571/66. Headings B3A and B3M. A process for making plate-like composite article having a core of an iron base alloy, and a cladding of a dissimilar metal, includes rolling together the core, after heating it to between 300‹ and 1350‹ F., and the unheated cladding at a speed of at least 100 feet/min. and at a reduction of 35-75%, the core and cladding contacting each other between the bite of the rolls with an included angle of from 5-22 degrees. The cladding, which may be applied to one or both sides of the core, can be of a dissimilar iron base alloy, or an alloy of Cu, Pb, Ag, Ni, Zu, Sn, Cr, Co, Ti or Al. Before bonding, the core and cladding may be cleaned and mechanically roughened. In an example, a core of 0À10% C iron alloy in a strip of 0À040 inch gauge was clad with a Cu base alloy containing 89% Cu, 0À04% Pb, balance Zu with a gauge of 0À010 inch. After cleaning the metals in alkaline solution and abrading their surfaces with a wire brush, the core was heated to 800‹ F. and the two metals rolled at 150 feet/min. with 65% reduction. The included angle of the core and cladding was 18 degrees at the roll bite, the cladding contacting one of the rolls before the core. The resultant composite had a gauge of 0À018 inch with the bonding area at the metal interface being at least 25% greater than the planar surface area of the composite.
