Abstract
1,139,501. Fuel cells. ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd. 1 Dec., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 43737/64. Heading H1B. [Also in Division. B1, B2 and C7] A gas-permeable diaphragm for providing pure hydrogen from reformed hydrocarbon gas for use with an electrode of a fuel cell, comprises a non-porous gas-permeable metallic member, e.g. Pd metal or Pd-Ag alloy foil 0À2mil. or less thick and a non-porous sheet of polymeric material, e.g. silicone elastomer or polyamide film between 0À01 and 1 mil. thick adhering face to face, the polymeric sheet being permeable to at least the same gas as the metallic member. The metallic member may be sandwiched between two sheets of polymeric material. The diaphragm may be made by depositing the metallic member as a layer on the polymeric material, either chemically by activating the material with a reducing agent and then coating with a solution comprising a salt of the metal of the member, or by electro-deposition; or the member may be contacted with a solution from which the polymeric material is deposited; or the material may be adhered to the member by heat and/or pressure.
