Abstract
1,139,212. Extrusion moulding machines. H. HOBHOUSE. 28 Feb., 1966 [4 Dec., 1964], No. 49561/64. Heading B5A. In an extrusion moulding machine for extruding thermoplastic materials such as rubber, plastics, pharmaceutical preparations or foodstuffs, screw 4 is driven by an hydraulic motor 3 supplied with fluid from a pump 2 via a flow control valve 5, the exhaust fluid from motor 3 passing to a motor 9 via a control valve 7. Motor 9 drives a feed-screw 10 within hopper 17 and the exhaust fluid therefrom passes to a reservoir 1 via a control valve 12. A further control valve 13 connected to fluid delivered to motor 3 by means of conduit 14, controls the exhaust fluid from motor 9 by communicating with valve 12 and also communicates both with a recirculation port in hopper 17 and the extrusion barrel by means of a by-pass 16. Initially control valve 13 is inoperative and by-pass 16 is closed, the exhaust from motor 3 flowing freely along conduits 6, 8 and 11 to reservoir 1. As material is fed to screw 4 resistance to its movement increases and pressure in conduit 15 is likewise increased until at a predetermined value valve 13 and by-pass 16 are opened. With valve 13 open, valve 12 is controlled in such a way, and hence the exhaust fluid from motor 9, that as pressure in conduit 15 increases the speed of motor 9 decreases and vice versa. Further, regulation depending on the condition of the material is provided by a thermocouple 19 which controls displacement of pump 2 and hence speed of rotation of motor 3 by a link including a signal amplifier 20 and an actuator 21. A valve 18 may relate delivery by motor 9 and screw 10 to output of screw 4 and also maintain a positive pressure of delivered material in hopper 17. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), feed to screw 4 is controlled by the condition of the extruded material, e.g. shear strength, tensile strength or viscosity. By-pass 16 and thermocouple 19 are dispensed with, and a take-off device (23) feeds the extrudate to a sensing device (24) which may be linked by a conduit (25) to provide a biasing action on valve (5) or alternatively control pump (2) via a signal amplifier and actuator. In particular, device (24) may comprise a rotary chopper to determine the shear strength of, for example, animal foodstuffs. The use of the machine for injection moulding is also mentioned when during mould filling, by-pass 16, Fig. 1, is interrupted, output from pump 2 is adjusted to a maximum and control valve 5 is by-passed. Either valve 13 is adjusted to determine the maximum pressure required for injection or, alternatively, line 14 is interrupted by a valve 22. The speed of screw 4 may be boosted by incorporating a fluid pressure accumulator.
