Abstract

1,139,081. Making brushes. R. PIOTROWSKI. 7 March, 1966 [5 March, 1965; 3 Sept., 1965; 20 Oct., 1965], No. 9965/66. Heading A4K. In a process for injection moulding brush stocks on to the ends of continuous strands of brush filaments, the newly cut ends of the strands are advanced by a reciprocating mechanism. The strands of polyamide filaments are unwound from reels and pass through polytetrafluoroethylene tubes 13 to an apertured block 5 of the same material. The holes in block 5 arrange the filaments in compact tuft formation (Figs 12-16, not shown), in which they are intermittently fed by clamp members 6a, b, to channels in blocks 7 and 8. Members 6a, b are driven by ram 23 and, during the rearward stroke of the latter, the strands slide freely through holes in a rubber block between members 6a, b. At the end of the rearward stroke, rod 25 is rotated to turn cam 24a and compress the rubber block between members 6a, b. The holes are consequently deformed to grip the strands and these are advanced on the forward stroke to eject the finished brush from the open mould 9a, b. Rod 25 is operated to release the cam 24a before each successive return stroke. The advancing mechanism is stopped when the ends of the strands emerge into the mould. Before the mould is closed, the ends are fused by a flame. Polystyrene is then injected into the mould cavity. After cooling, the mould is opened and ram 16b operated to sever the filaments against shear block 7. The process is repeated after ejection of the finished brush. In modified procedures, shearing may take place before moulding or the shear block may be put under partial pressure to grip the strands during moulding. Instead of advancing the strands in small steps, by means of a single clamp 6a, b, two such clamps may be used (Fig. 8, not shown). Alternatively, buckling of the filaments during advancing may be prevented by spaced supporting plates between the clamp and block 7. The whole length of a tuft may thus be advanced in a single stroke by bringing plates in face to face contact (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown).
