Abstract

1,138,468. Batteries. LEESONA CORP. 12 Jan., 1966 [25 Jan., 1965], No. 1430/66. Heading H1B. An air or oxygen depolarized cell has a composite cathode comprising a gas permeable, electrolyte impermeable, hydrophobic polymer membrane with a layer of electrochemically active catalyst on one major surface in contact with the electrolyte and with the other major surface of the membrane being exposed to air or oxygen. The membrane is a fluorocarbon polymer such as polytetrafluoroethylene and may provide at least part of the outer housing of the cell. The catalyst layer is a dispersion of platinum black and polytetrafluoroethylene particles, the anode is zinc, and the electrolyte is an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide. Other Group VIII metals may be substituted for the platinum, e.g., rhodium, palladium, ruthenium and osmium or silver, or gold, or oxides of nickel and cobalt are suitable. Suitable electrolytes, include hydroxides of sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium and caesium, or the alkali and alkaline earth carbonates as well as buffered solutions, or acidic electrolytes such as sulphuric acid and ammonium chloride. Anodes are of zinc, cadmium, aluminium, iron, lead or magnesium. The electrolyte can be in a matrix of ion-exchange resins, hydrophilic polymers, cerium oxide, thorium oxide, magnesium oxide, foamed glass or rigid hydrophilic foams.
