Abstract
1,137,869. Stabilizer for ester group-containing polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 April, 1966 [23 April, 1965], No. 17248/65. Heading C3R. [Also in Division C5] Polymeric materials containing ester groups are stabilized by incorporating therein a carbodiimide of the formula wherein X is a direct link, or -O- or -S-, and R is a radical containing 6-20 C atoms, e.g. in amount of 0À5-5À0 wt. per cent of the composition. Suitable groups RX- are octyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, phenyl, benzyl, #-phenylethyl, butylphenyl, cyclohexyl, ethoxyethoxyethoxy, dodecyloxy, dodecylthio, benzyloxy, #-cyclohexyloxyethoxy and #-chlordecyloxy. Polymers which may be stabilized are polyesters, polyesteramides, polyester urethanes, copolymers of unsaturated polyesters with other unsaturated compounds, and ester-containing polymerized unsaturated compounds. In an example, a polyester from adipic acid, ethylene glycol, and pentaerythritol is heated with tolylene diisooyanate and carbo-di-(p-dodecylphenyl-imide), giving, on curing, a polyurethane rubber.
