Abstract

1,137,565. Jib cranes; garage apparatus. B. DIXON-BATE Ltd. 4 Dec., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 41513/66. Headings B8B and B8H. A vehicle recovery crane 10, Fig. 1, mounted on a tractor vehicle 11 comprises a frame assembly formed by a longitudinal beam 12 at one end of which is secured a cross-beam 13, Fig. 2, an A-frame 14 extending upwardly from the beam 13 and a tie member 15 extending between the top of the A-frame and the other end of the beam 12, a coupling member 26 which is mounted on the beam 12 and is engaged with the vehicle 11, the member 26 being adjustable longitudinally of the beam 12, swivelling side plates 33, Fig. 5, mounted on the ends of the beam 13 which grip the vehicle 11 and are adjustable longitudinally of the beam 13, and means for connecting to the crane a vehicle to be recovered. The members 12 ... 15 of the frame assembly are of rectangular hollow section tube and can be dismantled for transport purposes. The coupling member 26 is a king pin and is engaged with a fifth wheel coupling (not shown) on the vehicle 11; it is secured to a channel member 19 slidably engaging the beam 12 and locked by a pin (23), Fig. 3 (not shown), passing through aligned holes in the member 19 and the beam 12, a series of such holes being provided for adjustment of the member 19. Each swivelling plate 33 is carried by a foot 28 slidably mounted on a guide 29 on the beam 13 and secured in adjusted position by a pin 30 engaged in aligned holes in the foot 28 and the guide 29. The frame assembly is also secured to the vehicle 11 by a chain 34. A winch 35 which may be a self sustaining gear winch is secured between the limbs of the A-frame 14 and has a cable 36 extending therefrom to two 3-sheave blocks 37, Fig. 6. An A-shaped drawbar 38 is pivoted at 39 to the beam 13 and has connected to it in a swivelling manner a chain spreader 40, the connection being by a tube 41 capable of limited lateral articulation and outward extension. In operation as the vehicle to be recovered is lifted and drawn towards the crane the tube 41 is automatically retracted into the drawbar where it is locked in adjusted position by a pin 42. In order to relieve the cable 36 of load during towing a chain 43 is attached between the chain spreader 40 and a hook 44 on the A-frame 14. The chain spreader 40 is formed with slots (not shown) for securing chains 45 attached to the towed vehicle. Securing brackets 46 are provided on the A- frame 14.
