Abstract

1,137,471. Pressing and rolling glass. S. M. COX. 21 June, 1966 [22 March, 1965], No. 11986/65. Heading G1M. An element of glass or glazed ceramic is given a smooth surface on at least one face by pressure thereon of a component having a working face itself of optical smoothness. Heated glazed ceramic is given a smooth surface by rolling thereover a roller and a glass gob is pressed by a die 14, the die or roller having an optically smooth surface and being preferably of fused silica glass coated with a film of refractory oxide, e.g. of tin, titanium or aluminium. As shown, a glass disc is formed by upward pressure of a mould 12 against the die 14, the gob of glass being produced from a glass rod 1 held in a rotatable chuck 2 mounted in a vertically displaceable member 4 connected to a counterweight, a clutch 5 to a pulley 3 being operable to move the member 4 up or down under the control of an optical system 6. The optical system 6 comprises two photo-sensitive cells at vertically spaced points, to sense a suspended gob of glass melted from the lower end of glass rod 1 by an oxy-gas torch 7 carried by a horizontal slide 8. The automatic movements control the size and temperature of the gob which falls rapidly under gravity from the rod 1 on to a shoot 11 directly in to the mould 12. The mould operation includes a trip switch on closure of mould 12 and die 14 to determine the time of dwell.
