[Also in Divisions B5 and D1] A method of making a tyre comprises laying a sheet of unvulcanized rubberized filamentary fabric incorporating a plurality of filaments which extend in substantially parallel side-byside relationship on a corrugated steel plate 1, applying suction through vents 3 to bring the sheet and fabric into intimate contact and thus crimp the filaments, applying to the surface of the fabric a sheet of unvulcanized rubber 7 having applied to its other surface a layer 8 of polythene, said rubber sheet adhering to the fabric at spaced positions, laying the adhered assembly on a flat surface, rolling the assembly to flatten the fabric layer and thus longitudinally to compress the filaments between the spaced positions, wrapping the compressed assembly around a cylindrical tyre carcass on a former, removing the polythene sheet, optionally applying a second compressed assembly such that the filaments are in opposed direction to the filaments of the first assembly, placing the assembly in a tyre mould where the diameter of the tyre is increased thus partially or completely decompressing the filaments. In a further embodiment, the fabric is crimped by applying it to a corrugated roller and applied directly to a tyre former or carcass where compression is effected.
