Abstract
1,136,923. Epoxidation. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 2 Dec., 1965, No. 51305/65. Heading C2C. Epoxides are prepared by the liquid phase reaction at 50-200‹ C. of an olefinic compound with a hydroperoxide ROOH, where R is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl group, in the presence of a catalyst which is added to the reaction mixture as a compound of molybdenum. Specified olefinic compounds include mono- and poly-olefinic cyclic and acyclic hydrocarbons, unsaturated acids, esters and alcohols. Preferred hydroperoxides are tbutyl and cumene hydroperoxides. The catalyst may be added in the form of an organic or inorganic compound of molybdenum, preferably as a salt of a Mo heteropoly acid, e.g., sodium silico-12-molybdate. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of a solvent. The hydroperoxide may be formed in situ by molecular oxygen oxidation of a portion of the olefin to be epoxidized. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,060,122 and 1,074,330.
