Abstract

1,136,718. Organosilicon polymers. DOW CORNING CORP. 12 May, 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 21183/66. Heading C3T. Organosilicon polymers are made by contacting (a) at least one organosilicon compound having an average of at least 1 Si-bonded OH group per molecule, each Si atom present being bonded to an average of 1 to 3 radicals which are phenyl, methyl, alkylene of 1 to 3 C atoms or phenylene radicals, any remaining valencies of the Si atoms being satisfied by oxygen in the form of siloxane linkages, and at least 1% by wt. of (a) of (b) liquid dimethyl sulphoxide, the contacting being effected in the presence of (c) an alkali polymerization catalyst having a pH of at least 12 when measured in an aqueous solution of a concentration not greater than 0À1 N. Catalysts (c) specified are quaternary ammonium and alkali metal silanolates, siloxanolates, hydrocarbonoxides and hydroxides, and alkali metal hydrides, phosphates and silicates. In typical Examples (1) a hydroxylated dimethyl polysiloxane, and (8) 1,4-bis-(dimethylhydroxysilyl)-benzene, were polymerized by contacting them with dimethyl sulphoxide and potassium phenoxide.
