Abstract

1,136,664. Surgical dressings. DOW CORNING CORP. 2 June, 1966 [7 July, 1965], No. 24673/66. Heading A5R. A medical dressing comprises a liquid-tight sealed envelope containing a silicone liquid in which is freely suspended a quantity of absorbent material, the quantity of liquid being in excess of that which can be absorbed by the absorbent material so that there is a pool of liquid in the envelope. The envelope may be made of a plastics material, for example polyethylene. The absorbent material may be sponge-like or fibrous, for example absorbent cotton. The silicone liquid may be an endblocked dimethylpolysiloxane, for example trimethylsiloxy-end-blocked dimethylpolysiloxane of formula (CH 3 ) 3 SiO[CH 3 ) 2 SiO] x Si(CH 3 ) 3 where x is a number such as to give the liquid a viscosity of 100 centistokes. The silicone liquid may contain unspecified medicinal agents. In use of the dressing, for example in the treatment of burns, the envelope is opened at one end and the injured body portion is inserted into the envelope, the opening of which then may be sealed by adhesive tape to an adjacent part of the body; for treatment of a hand injury, the absorbent material is squeezed for exercise and to promote circulation and filtration of the liquid through the absorbent material.
