Abstract

1,136,578. Phosphite polymer/organic borate compositions; polymer stabilizers. NATIONAL POLYCHEMICALS Inc. 24 March, 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 12945/66. Headings C3P and C3R. A stabilizing composition comprises a mixture of a phosphorus-containing polymer prepared by reacting a phenol, an aldehyde, and a trivalent phosphorus compound and an organic hydrocarbon substituted borate, the borate being present in an amount of 2 to 50% by weight of the stabilizing composition. The phosphorus containing polymers may be prepared by reaction of a phenol and an aldehyde to form a product which is then reacted with a trivalent phosphorus compound or a phenol may be reacted with a trivalent phosphorus compound to form an aromatic phosphite which is then reacted with an aldehyde. Exemplified phosphorus containing polymers are those prepared by reacting (a) tris-paranonyl phenyl phosphite with formaldehyde and (b) nonyl phenol with paraformaldehyde, followed by reaction with phosphorus trichloride. The organic borate may be 2,6-tertiary butyl 4-methyl phenyl dibutyl borate; tri-(nonyl phenyl)-borate; tricresyl borate; phenyl hexylene borate; octyl phenyl di-(ethyl hexyl)- borate; di-(nonyl phenyl)-isodecyl borate; dihexylene glycol diborate; trioctyl borate, and para tertiary butyl phenyl diisopropyl borate. The stabilizer compositions may be prepared in emulsion form by emulsification in water with e.g. a fatty acid alkali metal soap, or they may be dissolved in hydrocarbon solvents such as petroleum solvents and toluene or plasticizers such as fatty acid esters and phthalate esters. The above compositions may be used to stabilize natural or synthetic rubbery polymerizates in amounts of 0À1 to 5À0% by weight. Numerous types of polymer which may be stabilized are listed, those specifically exemplified being a styrene-butadiene latex rubber, a polybutadiene rubber, an acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber and a rubbery ethylene-propylenebutadiene terpolymer. The stabilizers may be used in conjunction with conventional stabilizers and antioxidants such as organic phosphites, alkylated phenols, aromatic amines, alkylene bis-alkylated phenols and thiobisalkylated phenols.
