Abstract

1,136,457. Polymers. GALGON CORP. 19 May, 1966 [9 June, 1965], No. 22364/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B2] A water-soluble polymer consists essentially, e.g. at least 90%, of repeating units of the formula where R 1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R 2 is the same as R 1 , e.g. methyl, or is a #-propionamido group. The polymer may be derived from the polymerization of monomers of formula The polymer may be formed by copolymerizing the said monomer with up to 10% by weight of a monomer comprising acrylamide, N- methylol acrylamide, N-vinyl 2-pyrrolidone, or a monomer of formula where A- is an anion, e.g. Cl-, R 3 is an allyl group, and R 4 is either R 2 or R 3 , e.g. methyl groups. The polymer may be cross-linked with 0À001 to 10% by weight of a water-soluble polyunsaturated monomer copolymerizable with a diallyl quaternary ammonium monomer, or 0À001 to 1À0% of one or more of the monomers: methylene - bisacrylamide, triallyl amine hydrohalide salts, lower alkyl triallyl quaternary ammonium compounds and allyl polysubstituted alcohols. The polymer may be poly - N - methyl - N - (# - propionamido) - 3,5- methylene piperidinium chloride, poly - (N,N. dimethyl - 3,5 - methylene piperidinium chloride), which may be cross-linked with from 0À1 to 1% by weight of the polymer of methylene bisacrylamide.
