Abstract

113,629. Blakoe, R. April 21, 1917. Steering.-The main planes of an aeroplane are adapted to be turned about an axle D rigid with them to vary their angle of incidence by means of a worm H gearing with a rack G on the planes and driven from the engine shaft through the reversing-gear shown. The rack G is mounted on the axle D and is connected to transverse frame members on the planes which have no other connexion to the fuselage. The worm H is mounted on a sleeve having a feather-key connexion with a spindle I adapted to be moved longitudinally by a lever J. Longitudinal movement of the spindle, by moving an abutment N, causes one or other of two springs M to move a corresponding clutch member and couple the spindle I to one or other of two bevel-wheels K, L which are continuously rotated in opposite directions by a wheel O driven by a worm I<1> on the engine shaft C<1>. The resulting motion is transmitted to the sleeve carrying the worm Hand the planes are adjusted.
