Abstract
1,134,542. Laminated tile. JAMES HALSTEAD Ltd. 27 Jan., 1966 [29 Oct., 1964 (2)], Nos. 44145/64 and 44146/64. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] A laminate comprises a release paper applied to the adhesive surface of a tile, e.g. a polyvinyl chloride tile, having an adhesive backing so that it may be readily stuck to a surface, made by applying a layer of adhesive on a supporting surface from which the adhesive can be removed after it has been dried, drying the adhesive whilst it is supported and applying the tile to the adhesive either before or after the dried adhesive has been removed from the support surface, the bond between the tile and adhesive being greater than the bond between the support surface and the adhesive. The adhesive may be dried by a heating step. The support surface may be an endless band which moves through a heating zone to dry the adhesive layer carried thereby and (1) the tile is applied to the dried adhesive prior to removal of the adhesive and tile from the band or (2) the dried adhesive is removed by applying a web of release paper thereto and then removing the composite web of release paper and adhesive from the endless band and subsequently applying the tile to the adhesive such that the bond between the tile and adhesive is greater than the bond between the adhesive and release paper. The sandwich of tile, adhesive and band may be passed through nip rollers. The release paper includes any material to which the dried adhesive has a bond lower than its bond to the article or tile. After removal of the dried adhesive from the support surface, the release paper may be applied to the adhesive backing on the adhesive backed tile, and another adhesive backed tile may be applied to the other side of the release paper. The support surface may have a release characteristic to enable the adhesive to be removed readily therefrom after the adhesive has been dried. The adhesive may be applied, e.g. by curtain coating means, roller coater, or spray, either in a single layer or in two or more coatings to form the final layer; in the latter case each coating is dried before application of the next coating; the same quantity of adhesive may be applied at each coating operation and each coating is subjected to drying for the same period; or the quantity of adhesive may be smaller in succeeding layers with each succeeding drying time being correspondingly reduced. The adhesive may be applied to the belt in spaced bands, each band corresponding to the width of a tile or marginally less than the width of a tile. The adhesive is preferably a water based emulsion or a solution in an organic solvent of a permanent tack adhesive such as a blend of acrylic copolymers, or butadieneacrylonitrile. The adhesive coatings may be of different adhesives. A blocking layer as described in Specification 864,882 may be used between a plasticized P.V.C. tile and the adhesive. .
