Abstract

1,134,118. Acidic oxide sols. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 12 April, 1967 [11 May, 1966], No. 20833/66. Heading C1A. An aqueous, colloidal acidic oxide concentrate, containing more than 50% by weight of the acidic oxide is prepared by subjecting an initial aquasol to increased gravitational force in a centrifuge. The product may take the form of a " solid-sol " which is easily dispersible in water or a water miscible organic liquid, such as acetone. For example, a silica aquasol containing 20 to 50% by weight of silica having a weight average particle diameter of 1000 to 2000 Š may be centrifuged under a force of 40,000 to 45,000 g. for periods of up to 1 hr. to give a " solid sol " containing 55 to 75% silica by weight. Increasing the initial particle size or the period of centrifugation increases the proportion of the silica originally present which is recovered in the solid sol. Other acidic oxides whose sols may be similarly treated include those of Al, Cr, Ti, V, W and Ge.
