Abstract

[Also in Division C4] In a monogrammic sign comprising a display medium associated with two sets of electric conductors forming a co-ordinate array wherein energization of a selected conductor from each set produces a " spot " at the intersection, the conductors of at least one set are energized through individual gates which are selectively opened according to the magnitude of an input voltage corresponding to a co-ordinate of a " spot " to be displayed. A comparator CO compares the input (deflection) voltage with a feedback voltage the magnitude of which signifies the particular (Y) conductor already energized, and instructs a shift register RS to open any upper or lower gate gy depending on whether the feedback voltage is less or greater than the input voltage. The co-ordinate system may be cartesian or polar. The display medium may be electroluminescent, or electrically controlled absorption apparatus or a phosphor quenching system (photoluminescent phosphor) may be used. The gating circuits may be carried by a substrate embodying the display medium and be deposited by evaporation or be mounted by bonding solid state switches or transistors to the substrate. The whole electrical control system may be fixed to the substrate, the component parts being defined by films and/or bonded-on semi-conducting material.
