Abstract

1,133,904. Injection moulding coupling ends on to pipes. ISPRA S.p.A. 19 April, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 18052/67. Heading B5A. A machine for moulding sockets on to pre-formed fibrocement pipes comprises an adjustable pipe support 20, a frame 1 supporting a first fluid cylinder 2 for reciprocating an expansible mandrel 3a-3c to and from engagement in one end of the pipe, a further pair of cylinders 4, 5 each carrying and reciprocating in opposed directions plates 50, 60 respectively to which are attached mould halves 7, 8, means (not shown) for injecting material into a hollow between the mandrel and mould halves, and means for expanding the mandrel to seal the hollow. The support 20 comprises a V-shaped plate rotatable about an axis (28), Fig. 4 (not shown), and is loaded with a pipe by tilting to a loading plate (29) and then returned to the vertical, and is subsequently tipped to a discharging plate (30) for unloading a pipe carrying a coupling end. In operation a pipe is loaded on to the support (20), the mandrel is moved horizontally to engage one end of the pipe and the mould halves are moved vertically in opposite directions to close the mandrel, which is then expanded by liquid pressure to seal the mould cavity. The mandrel comprises a removable part 3b located on a spigot portion 3c of the main body part 3a which portions have channels 17, 18 and annular conduits 19 therein to allow passage of water to the inner surface of a rubber lining 11 on the mandrel to expand the mandrel. The lining is maintained in position by annular lips 11a, some with an undercut profile 11b, and by screw-threaded cups and collars 13-16. Discharge of the water facilitates stripping of the mandrel from the socket end. A cutting wheel 31 driven by a motor 32 and raised by a ram 34, Fig. 1, trims the pipe and the pipe support 20 is adjustable in position by a system of rods and levers 22-27. The mandrel is replaceably secured to a rod of the cylinder 2 to facilitate moulding sockets of different configurations.
