Hard surface cleaning compositions comprise (a) 1-10% by weight of detergent, (b) an alkali metal (or ammonium) borate and (c) sodium carbonate, said borate to carbonate ratio being present in ratios by weight from 1 : 1 to 4 : 1 (when expressed as sodium borate decahydrate and sodium carbonate, anhydrous) and in total amount of at least 20% by weight of the total composition, wherein the composition at 1% concentration in water has a pH of at least 9À6. Detergents for (a) are anionic surface active agents, such as the alkyl sulphates and alkyl aryl sulphonates, particularly dodecyl benzene sulphonate, or nonionic surface active agents, such as ethylene oxide condensates of fatty alcohols or alkyl phenols. If more than 4% detergent is used, a soap or lather depressant may be included. The borate (b) may be anhydrous or hydrated and is conveniently the penta- or deca-hydrate of sodium borate. Optional additives include 10-50% by weight of a source of polyvalent anions, e.g. phosphates; organic sequestrants such as EDTA or nitrilotriacetic acid sodium salt, perfume, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, nonionic emulsifiers, or chlorinated or ammoniated compounds, e.g. sodium phosphate hypochlorite as a germicidal agent.
