Abstract

1,133,254. Locating crashed aircraft. C. E. ASHLINE. 28 April, 1966, No. 18696/66. Headings B7G and B7W. [Also in Division F4] A signalling device for locating e.g. a crashed aircraft comprises a balloon 62 stored in folded condition in a tubular member 36 mounted on the aircraft and closed by a cover 64, the balloon and a compressed gas cylinder 82 connected thereto being ejected from the tubular member 36 by a spring 52 retained in a loaded position by a catch mechanism until automatically or manually released in the event of a crash whereby the balloon is suspended by a line 50 above the wreckage. The catch mechanism comprises a rod 78 which passes out of the tubular member 36 and through a slot provided in a rotatable disc (142), Fig. 5 (not shown). The end of the rod is hooked, Fig. 7 (not shown), so that it is unable to pass back through the disc (142). When the disc (142) is turned either manually through a lever operated cable, or automatically through a system of levers operated by the impact of a steel ball moved by the force of the crash, the disc is turned to a position in which the hooked rod 78 can pass through the slot in the disc. After the spring 52 has ejected the balloon 62 and gas cylinder 88, segments 102 fall away to release a lever 98. The release of the lever 98 allows a spring 100 to retract a pin 96 whereby a cutter 92 pierces the gas cylinder to initiate inflation of the balloon. The cover 64 is connected to the balloon and is provided with a shield 124 illuminated by a bulb 116 supplied with power from a battery 110 through a switch 112.
