Abstract

1,133,203. Photo-electric spectral absorption analysis. OPTICAL COATING LABORATORY Inc. Nov.11, 1965 [Nov. 24, 1964], No.47865/65 Heading G1A. In a photo-electric spectral absorption investigation a sample beam and a reference beam are passed through a circular filter which is rotated to selected successive wavelength bands from the two beams. A photo-electric device receives the two beams alternately and drives a shutter in the reference beam to balance the two beams. The degree of shutter movement indicates the amount of absorption of a sample in the sample beam and provides a Y-signal to a moving chart recorder, the X-movement of the chart being correlated with the movement of the circular filter selecting the wavelengths. In the figure radiation from a source 11, such as a hermit lamp, black-body or tungsten filament lamp is split into two beams S and R by the twin apertured plate 14 and passed alternately by rotating chopper disc 16 through windows 26 and 27, the reference beam window 27 having a variable shutter 31. A sample cell is placed in the sample beam S either as shown at 61 or as shown dotted at 62. The two beams after passing through the rotating circular filter 38 impinge upon a photo-resistor 48 whose output feeds one winding of a two phase motor driving the shutter 31. The other phase winding is fed from the power supply driving the chopper disc 16. The shutter 31 is thereby driven so as to balance the intensity of the sample and reference beams upon the photo-resistor and the movement is communicated to the pen of the chart recorder 56 as the amount of absorption by the sample. The chart speed is correlated with the speed of rotation of the circular filter, which is of the kind disclosed in Specification 1,117, 772.
