Abstract

1,133,064. Photo-electric arrangements. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. April 27, 1967 [May 25, 1966], No.19484/67. Heading G1A. [Also in Division H1] The negative resistance exhibited, due to Gunn effect, when an appropriately constituted and demensioned semi-conductor sample is subjected to a sufficiently high electric field can be modified by radiation incident on the layer; but in use of such a device to measure radiation intensity, false indications can arise due to stray radiation. To avoid such false indications the invention proposes coating a Gunn effect sample with a radiation excluding substance which is either (a) transparent to the radiation to be measured but opaque to other radiation or (b) opaque to all radiation but has a transparent window. In the latter case the source of radiation to be measured is so positioned that this radiation impinges directly on the window area.
