Abstract

1,133,061. Manufacturing heat-shrinkable plastics. F. ADANY. 25 April, 1966 [26 April, 1965], No. 18077/66. Heading B5A. A heat-shrinkable sheathing of plastics material, e.g. polyethylene cross-linked by irradiation, is formed by passing a pre-extruded tube 9 enclosed by a conveyer belt 3 through a tubular heater 2, expanding the tube 9 without longitudinal stretching so that belt 3 contacts the internal surface of heater 2, progressively increasing the temperature of tube 9 as it moves through heater 2 and rapidly cooling it as it emerges therefrom. Tube 9 may be taken from a reel, the coiled end of the tube being connected to a source of gas under pressure, and the treated tube may be wound on a further reel after it has passed between niprollers 11 which maintain a constant pressure, e.g. 5 cm. of Hg, within the tube. Belt 3, driven by motor 6, may be of glass-fibre reinforced PTFE, and is wrapped around tube 9 by a series of rings 7 whose diameters decrease in the downstream direction to that of the bore of heater 2. Heater 2 comprises a metallic casing 1a surrounded by a resistance element 1b and insulation 1c. Element 1b comprises a wire in the form of a helix whose pitch decreases in the downstream direction to a zone of maximum temperature, e.g. 130-140‹ C., where the pitch is a constant minimum. Cooling device 10 may be an air blower.
