Abstract

1,132,526. Spot welding; coiling wire or strip on tubing; corrugating; making gilled tubing. INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E.O. PATONA AN USSR. 15 April, 1966, No. 16523/66. Headings B3A, B3E and B3R. In a machine for making gilled tubes having convoluted wire or strip elements coiled thereabout and welded to the tube in the trough of each loop, the tube 10 is rotated and simultaneously advanced incrementally through a hollow rotatable guide tube 7; wire or strip material is formed into loops by reciprocating punches 12 which bend the wire or strip about lugs 8 projecting from the end of the guide tube 7 and the loops are spot-welded to the tube by reciprocating electrodes 15. On each rotary and advance movement of the tube 10 a loop already formed on the lugs 8 by a punch 12 is brought into position for welding to the tube by an electrode 15. The guide tube 7 is rotated incrementally by means of a ratchet wheel 18 and pawl 19 and a reciprocating gripper coupling 24 having pivotally mounted gripper arms 27 is cammed axially by the rotation of the guide tube to advance and rotate the tube 10. Gripper arms 48 prevent return movement of the tube 10 when the coupling 24 is returned under spring action. The punches 12 are spring- loaded and reciprocated by a linkage 42, 43 while electrodes 15 are mounted on the rod 17 of a pneumatic cylinder 16 which is reciprocated in suitably cycled relation by an eccentric mechanism 35, 36. A co-operating eccentric mechanism is arranged to switch on the welding current when the loop of wire or strip is pressed against the tube 10. A plurality of wires (32), (Fig. 1, not shown), may be fed and welded to the tube together, being fed from reels (31) mounted on the machine. The bending of the wire or strip material may be effected by the electrodes themselves.
