[Also in Division C3] A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of calcific gall stones, renal calculi, inter alia consists of (a) a phosphate selected from sodium tripolyphosphate (Forms I and II), sodium hexametapyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, S.Q. phosphate i.e. Na 8 P 6 O 11 and sodium acid pyrophosphate together with (b) a chelating agent selected from (I) N,N-di-(2-hydroxyethyl) glycine and the sodium salt thereof, N-(2-hydroxyethyl) ethylene diamine triacetic acid and the trisodium salt thereof, 1,2-diaminocyclohexane tetraacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, 2-hydroxymethyl-5-hydroxy-pyran, and N,N,N'N'- tetrakis (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine Or (II) ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, the mono-, di-, tri-, tetrasodium and calcium salts thereof, diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid and pentasodium diethylene triamine pentaacetate and/or (c) an ion-exchange material selected from (III) a resin having a carboxylic acid functional group, sodium alumino-silicate gel, a polystyrene matrix having a nuclear sulphonic acid functional group, a styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer matrix with sulphonic acid functional groups, a hydrocarbon matrix having phosphonic acid groups, a styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer matrix with a quaternary ammonium functional group, and a styrenedivinyl benzene copolymer matrix with a polyalkylamine functional group or (IV) (when the chelating agent, if present, is a chelating agent of group (I)) poly-N-vinyl-5-methyl-2- oxazolidinone and co-polymers of N-vinyl-5- methyl-2-oxazolidinone. When the chelating agent is of group I and/or the ion-exchange material is of group III, the composition may also contain a colloidal carrier e.g. carboxymethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose. The invention also includes a composition comprising a phosphate as defined in (a) above together with a chelating agent selected from group I above and/or an ion exchange material selected from group IV above and a colloidal carrier. The compositions may include water as a carrier.
