Abstract

1,132,199. Vessels for special purposes. A. P. PEDRICK. 28 June, 1967, No. 29703/67. Heading B7A. A vessel intended to be permanently inhabited comprises a large single deck buoyant platform having a bow 1 and stern 2, additional buoyancy being provided by an air pocket 41. Upon the platform are arranged various superstructures fabricated in light plastics materials. They consist of a centrally disposed debating chamber 3 around which are arranged in successive rings places of worship 4 . . . 7, schools and colleges 8, gardens 9, and an accommodation ring 10, the latter supporting a transparent dome 14. A tower extends from the chamber 3 to a computer centre 12 and above this a navigation control centre 13. Above the latter extends a mast 15 for aerials and a mooring for airships. Ahead of the accommodation ring are sports fields 17, 18 and near the bow a hospital 19, medical research centre 20, swimming pool 21 and observation deck 22. Astern of the accommodation ring are further sports spaces 23, 24, theatres 25, 26, workshops 29, a nuclear power station 30 and incinerator units 31 heating desalination plant 32. At the stern are turbine houses 33 locating lighting and services units 34 and turbines for driving the propulsion screws 35. To each side of the vessel are airstrips 36, 37 separated from the central structures by transparent sound proof screens 38, 39. The interior of the buoyant platform locates storerooms. The computer centre 12 locates a computer which registers votes which each and all the inhabitants of the unit make on important decisions. Communication between various parts of the unit is by means of ring roads 27 on which run trams 28 propelled by linear motors and supported on air cushions.
