Abstract

1,132,151. Preserving food, flowers and live shell fish. BEST FERTILIZERS CO. 14 Jan., 1966, No. 1814/66. Headings A1A and A2D. Plant and animal matter subject to degradation in the presence of oxygen is preserved by loading it into containers and purging the atmosphere in the containers with nitrogen or a nitrogen-argon mixture, to reduce the oxygen content therein to a predetermined level between “% and 5% by volume, during a period of time such that substantially negiligible degradation of the matter occurs, and subsequently maintaining the oxygen content at substantially the predetermined level by further periodic additions of the purge gas. The purge gas is preferably supplied from outlet means communicating with the lower portion of a gas storage cylinder and hence introduced into the storage Container as a liquid spray, the vapourizalion of which serves also to reduce the temperature within the container. The gas cylinder may be housed either inside or outside the storage container. The contamer may be mounted on a vehicle or semi-trailer. The supply of purge gas may be controlled automatically in response to an oxygen sensing means or following the initial purge, may be supplied at a constant rate sufficient to compensate for leakage from the container The temperature humidity and carbon dioxide content of the storage atmosphere may also be controhed The plant and animal matter may be stored unpackaged or in small gas-pervious packages within the container or in non-gas-pervious packages in which latter case the purge gas is supplied to each package from a manifold. In the examples the materials preserved are: fruit and vegetables - lettuce, green beans, peas, sweet corn, asparagus, cauliflower, cantaloupe, strawberries, plums and tomatoes; cut flowers - carnations, roses, stocks and chrysanthemums; meatbeef, lamb, poultry and pork; fresh fish; and live shell fish - lobsters; oysters, crabs and clams. In one example lettuce is stored in an atmosphere the oxygen content of which is alternated between 0.25% and 10% by means of a continuous flow of nitrogen and an interrupted flow of air.
