The cable termination of Specification 940,148 in which a hollow conductive terminating structure 6 is secured to a bared end portion of a fluid cooled cable conductor 1 is modified in that the coolant ducting is constituted by a hollow insulating member 20 surrounding a bared length of the cable coolant retaining layer 3, the duct being closed about said layer at the end of the termination remote from the structure 6. As shown, the end of the cable conductor 1 is squeezed between an insert 5 and the terminating structure 6 which is sealingly secured to a conductive end-housing 9 by means of studs 12 and a co-operating plate 11 and seal 10. Ports 7 in the structure 6 interconnect the cable coolant channel 2 with a duct A connected to a coolant supply pipe 23 fixed in a chamber 22 sealingly secured to the cable coolant retaining layer 3 by means of a collar 24 integral with the layer 3. The chamber 22 is electrically connected 28 to the cable screen 4 which may be of metallic and/or graphited tapes. An alternative seal between the structure 6 and housing 9 provides for thermal expansion (Fig. 2, not shown). An alternative seal between the cable layer 3 and chamber 22 includes a split sleeve (42) (Fig. 3, not shown) clamped by a flange to the chamber, wire (45) and epoxide glass bandaging (43) being wrapped around the cable shield (4) and sleeve (42) respectively.
