Abstract

1,131,825. Coating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 16 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 2293/67. Headings B2E and B2K [Also in Division C3] Substrates may be melt- or solution-coated with crosslinkable compositions comprising (1) a polyethylene having a melt index of at least 200 dg/min, a molecular weight of 3,000 to 10,000 and a degree of branching equal to at least 5 methyl groups per 100 carbon atoms, and (2) an organic peroxide in amount sufficient to crosslink the polyethylene at elevated temperature. Specified substrates are paper, paper board, plastics, ceramics, wood and metals, particularly copper and aluminium conductors which may be coated by passing through a melt or organic solvent solution. The compositions may also comprise fillers, e.g. ground ceramics, treated clays, metal powders, titanium dioxide, silica, carbon black and calcium carbonate; heat and light stabilisers; other polymers, e.g. high molecular weight polyethylenes; and monomers, e.g. diallyl phthalate. Examples describe compositions of low molecular weight branched polyethylenes and (1-3, 8, 9, 11 and 12) dicumyl peroxide, (4) t.butyl perbenzoate, (5) dicumyl peroxide and calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide or silica, (6) benzoyl peroxide, (7) dicumyl peroxide and carbon black and (10) dicumyl peroxide and high molecular weight polyethylene.
