Abstract

1,131,425. Porous refractory oxides. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 4 March, 1966 [25 March, 1965], No. 12705/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] Porous articles are manufactured by forming a coherent particle incorporating both grains of a refractory or metallic substance and grains of a non-metallic substance which is oxidizable below the melting-point of the refractory substance, sintering and heating in an oxidizing atmosphere e.g. air, CO2, steam or steam and hydrogen to oxidize and remove the non- metallic substance. The refractory substance may be urania, thoria, beryllia, zirconia, alumina, yttria, or silica. The non-metallic substance may be carbon. The particles may be prepared by adding carbon black to an aqueous sol of thoria and urania, the thoria/urania ratio being approximately 10: 1 and carbon/urania plus thoria ratio being 2: 1, dispersing the mixture in a gelling medium, washing and drying the particles, which are then sintered and oxidized as indicated.
