Abstract
113,090. Drissner, A. E., Glosh, F. P., Henn, E. C., Smith, O. A., and Stern, R. L. Jan. 22, 1917, [Convention date]. Lathes.-Consists of an improved multiplespindle screw machine, provided with four automatically operated cross-slides, of the type in which the rotary work spindles are journaled in a horizontal cylinder automatically indexed and locked. The lathe has four rotary work spindles mounted in a rotary cylinder, which is provided with means for taking up wear radially and longitudinally, and is supported by a tail rod secured to a disk running on anti-friction rollers carried by the framing, and serving also to support the rear ends of the stock. The cylinder has a ring of teeth in gear with a pinion 226, Fig. 7, carrying cams 227, with which a roller on a lever 10, rotating with the cam-drum spindle 18, engages to index the cylinder. The cylinder is locked against a spring stop 12, by a wedge-ended bolt 12 actuated by a cam-lever 11 and a spring. The spindles are hollow and provided with ball thrust bearings and with known means for chucking and feeding the stock, and have friction-clutch driving- gear. When the spindles are unclutched, they are braked and locked to the framing by expanding friction-rings. The feed gear is actuated by a slider 41, Fig. 10, with which a head 17 on each spindle engages in turn. The slide is moved on rods 43 by the system of levers shown in Fig. 11. By adjusting the positions of the collar 47 and nut 48 on the rod 46, the movement of the slide can be varied by introducing more or less lost motion. The rod 46 is pivoted to a lever 45 which has a roller 49a engaging in a slot in the lever 44. These levers are actuated by cams and rollers 49, 49. By moving the connexion of the levers to the slot 51, the same cams may give a long or a short feed. The main cam-drum 8, Fig. 12, is driven from the spindle 167, which may be driven by an electro-motor or otherwise through a two-speed worm and spur gear. The worm wheel 271 drives the cam-drum through pins 270 which are sheared off when the strain is excessive. The main toolslide 4, Fig. 12, is guided in part by shafts 70, 70, and in part on a guideway 57 on the lathe bed, and is recoprocated by a spindle 60 which has a certain freedom of motion about a pin 74 and is actuated by cams on the drum 8. The cam. shaft is driven through an automatically controlled two-speed gea.r mounted on an intermediate shaft that also carries a sprocket for driving an oil pump. A hand drive for the cam shaft is provided for use in setting up the machine. The spindle 188 which carries drilling or screw-threading tools is splined to a hollow driving-shaft 187 in which it can slide under the control of a spring. The shaft is driven either at a high or low speed by toothed gearing controlled by a hand-operated clutch, and also by a thread determining mechanism tripped by the cam shaft. The cross-slides 5 and 6, Fig. 5, are carried on guideways on the bed with lateral and vertical adjustments, and the upper slides 232, 232, are carried on similar guideways formed on an upper extension of the bed. All four are actuated by levers on hexagonal shafts 83 which are rocked bv cams acting through pairs of slotted levers 89, 93, the point of connexion 93 of which can be adjusted to vary the stroke of the slides. The cam gear is within the bed and is thus protected from damage by turnings &c. Cuttings are prevented from passing into the work spindle cylinder by a felt washer surrounding the shaft 70. Stops for the stock feed and the cross slides are provided as shown in Fig. 5.
