Abstract
1,130,069. Tertiary amines. BAIRD CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc. 23 March, 1967 [28 March, 1966], No. 13749/67. Heading C2C. A process for the amination of an alkyl halide comprises: reacting said alkyl halide with a stoichiometric excess of a secondary amine in a two-phase aqueous/organic system, thereby evolving an amine hydrohalide; adding an alkaline material to the resultant mixture at a controlled rate so as to react with the amine hydrohalide as it is evolved without forming a substantial excess of said alkaline material; and thereafter recovering an aminated product. The reaction is preferably carried out at 50- 190 C. Examples describe the preparation of dodecyldimethylamine, n-octyldimethylamine, stearyldimethylamine and tridecyldimethylamine.
