1,129,610. Hydrogenating aromatic nitro compounds. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 15 Dec., 1965, No. 53284/65. Heading C2C. In a continuous process for the liquid phase hydrogenation of an aromatic polynitro compound (to the polyamine) or m-nitrobenzotrifluoride (to m-aminobenzotrifluoride) wherein the nitro compound is fed with H2 to a zone containing an agitated slurry of Ni or Pd catalyst, the zone is kept saturated with H 2 , the nitro compound is fed at a rate equivalent to a catalyst loading of up to 0À15 pound equivs. of NO 2 groups per hour per pound of catalyst, the concentration of the nitro compound is kept below 0À1 weight per cent by continuously withdrawing from the zone a portion of liquid phase (but not the catalyst) of the slurry, and the catalyst concentration in the zone is kept between 2 and 25 weight per cent of the slurry. Specified polynitro compounds are di- and trinitrotoluenes, tetranitrodiphenylethane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- bis(nitrophenyl)methane and dinitrocresol.
