Abstract

112,956. Leitner, H., and Exley, W. H. Oct. 27, 1916. Electrodes; supports for electrodes.-The support for the active material of a storage battery consists of a grooved perforated plate of wood, wood pulp, or other preparation of wood, preferably porous, having conductors in the grooves in the form of wires d, Fig. 1, laced through the perforations or strips having tongues which may pass through the perforations as shown in plan in Fig. 14. The grooves may be horizontal or vertical and may be undercut and formed on one or both sides of the support, and the plate may be bipolar, the material in adjacent grooves being of opposite polarity. Fig. 8 shows a plate in which the grooves do not extend to the bottom but leave a solid portion f forming a support. Apertures f<1> facilitate circulation of the electrolyte. The support f may be a separate piece dovetailed to the plate. Fig. 16 shows in plan a form in which strips d are on both sides of the plate, tongues j passing through the perforations from both sides. The tongues may project opposite to one another from both strips d in which case they do not pass through the plate. The insulating support may also be of tubular or polygonal form with grooves on one or both sides as shown in Fig. 20.
