[Also in Division H2] In a circuit incorporating a D.C. controlled saturable reactor 1, 2 for controlling an A.C. supply, 6, to a load 5, short-circuits in the A.C. windings 3, 4 of the reactor are detected by monitoring the A.C. voltage across two auxiliary windings 10, 11 which falls to a low value when a short occurs. In Fig. 2 two saturable reactors each of the type shown in Fig. 1 are used for controlling the barrier at an automatic level crossing. The D.C. motor 13 for raising the barrier is supplied from A.C. line 14 through rectifier bridge 15 and reactors 16, 17. The auxiliary windings 10, 11 of the respective reactors are connected to two control windings of a magnetic logic element 19. When the flux in the toroid from the control windings is zero a voltage is induced in the secondary winding 21 when the primary winding of the toroid is energized from line 20. If a short-circuit is produced between the turns of one of the reactors, the resultant flux induced in the toroid is no longer zero due to a difference in voltages appearing across the two sets of auxiliary windings 10, 11, i.e. the voltage across the short-circuited reactor's windings 10, 11 falls to a low value. Logic element 19 becomes saturated and the voltage in the secondary winding 21 is reduced to zero resulting in the blocking of the level crossing release drive and the switching of the D.C. control current of the reactors to zero to cut off the supply to motor 13 to keep the barrier closed.
