Abstract

1,129,097. Laminates. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 27 Oct., 1965 [2 Nov., 1964], No. 45478/65. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D2] A laminate comprises at least one compressed and coherent waterleaf which contains an entangled mixture of particulate mica and essentially unfused "wholly aromatic" polyamide fibrids, and may contain also up to 30% of "wholly aromatic" polyamide fibres. A "wholly aromatic polyamide" is a polymer in which repeating units, each containing an aromatic radical, are linked by the group -CO-NH-, the nitrogen and carbon of each such group being directly attached to a ring carbon of an aromatic radical. Polyamides referred to are: poly(metaphenylene isophthalamide) and those disclosed in Specification 871,579. Sheet-like structures ocmprising at least one such waterleaf are resistant to high temperatures and suitable for use as electrical insulation. The waterleaves may be laminated together by heat and pressure.
