Abstract

New polyamides are made by polycondensing p-xylene diamine and dodecan-1,12-dioic acid or a salt formed by these two components. The reaction mixture may include up to 25 mol per cent of other polyamide-forming components e.g. (a) a diamine, e.g. an aliphatic diamine of formula H 2 N-(CH 2 ) n -NH 2 , where n = 2-12, 1,3- or 1,4-diaminocyclohexane, 1,3- or 1,4-di (aminomethyl) cyclohexane or m-xylylene diamine; (b) a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid of formula where n = 1-9 or hexahydroterephthalic, hexahydro - p - xylylenedicarboxylic, pxylylenedicarboxylic, terephthalic or isophthalic acid; or (c) amino-carboxylic acid or their lactams, e.g. aminocarboxylic acids of formula NH 2 -(CH 2 ) n -COOH, where n = 2-11 (or their lactams), 4-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid, 4 - aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid or 4-aminocyclohexylacetic, acid. Components (a) and (b) may be used in the form of a salt with one another or with the basic polyamide-forming components. Other ingredients which may be included are (d) chainstoppers e.g. acetic acid; (e) pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide; or (f) stabilizers, e.g. manganese or copper compounds. Polycondensation of the reactants is generally effected in an aqueous solution in a closed vessel, the temperature being raised gradually whilst allowing the escape of steam and finally completing the polycondensation at above 250‹ C. Examples describe the polycondensation of p-xylylene diammonium dodecandioate or a mixture thereof with hexamethylene diammonium dodecandioate. Uses: textile fibres, tyre cords, industrial belting.
