Abstract
1,128,879. Polymerizing bicycloheptadienes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 6 June, 1967 [8 June, 1966], No. 26074/67. Heading C5E. Bicyclo[2,2,1]heptadiene-2,5 and alkyl derivatives thereof are dimerized and/or trimerized at 100-200‹ C. in the presence of (a) a catalyst which is a complex compound of a metal of Groups I B or VIII of the Periodic Table in a low oxidation state (preferably zero) as the central atom with electron-yielding compounds as ligands; and (b) a dienophilic compound, e.g. maleic anhydride, benzoquinone, acrylic acid, acrolein, acrylonitrile or cinnamaldehyde. The catalyst is preferably an iron complex, which may be prepared by mixing a suitable iron con pound with the electron-yielding compound, and optionally, if the iron is not already in a low oxidation state, with a reducing agent such as a trialkyl or alkoxydialkyl aluminium. The electron-yielding compound may be bicyclo[2,2,1]-heptadiene-2,5 or its dimer, another olefin, or a triaryl phosphine, and carbonyl g o ps may also be present. Preferably the starting material is boiled with the dienophilic compound prior to contact with the catalyst. The dimerisation and/or trimerisation is preferably conducted in the absence of a solvent, and the products may be hydrogenated in the presence of Raney nickel.
