Abstract

1,128,796. Tensioning apparatus; stop motions; spindle-driving mechanism. LEESONA CORP. 16 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 2168/67. Heading D1D. In a machine for winding a plurality of yarns &c. means are provided for imparting a predetermined equal tension to each of the yarns, together with control means, which when one yarn fails, adjusts the effect of the tensioning-means to maintain the tension in each of the remaining yarns &c. at the said predetermined value. Yarns Y 1 , Y 2 , Fig. 2, to be wound on aligned drum-driven packages 14, 16, pass to distributing-guides 20 by way of rollers 40, 40a on arms 42. The packages are carried on a housing 13 which is moved as the wind proceeds, either by the growth of the package or by programming means, gradually to rotate a shaft 76 through a link 142, a cam 144, a link 146 and a sector 138. Movement of the shaft 76 is caused to provide "coarse" and "fine" adjustments of the tension as the package grows. There is provision also for lighting a signal lamp when one or both yarns break; for, when one yarn breaks, maintaining the tension in the other while winding continues; and for stopping the winding when both yarns break. "Coarse" tension control. The rollers 40, 40a are mounted on arms connected to blocks 126, Fig. 3, rotatably mounted on a shaft having a collar 56 at one end. Each block 126 has an ear 136 engaging a projection 134 on the shaft. The collar 56 is connected to springs 64, the other ends of which are connected to arms 82, 84, Fig. 4. The arm 82 is fast on shaft 76; arm 84 is loosely mounted on it, but is supported by a plate 86 carried by arm 82 and which carries a solenoid 90, of which the armature is spring- urged outwardly and engages beneath a roller 105 attached to arm 84. The springs exert a torque on the collar 56 which tends to move the projection 134 to bear against the ears 136 to tower the rollers in opposition to the tendency of the tension in the yarns to raise them. 'As the package grows the torque exerted by the springs is reduced as shaft 76 rotates, the arm 82 being lowered, and the arm 84 allowed to fall, as the package grows and the shaft 76 is rotated. "Fine" tension control. As the package grows, the tension tends to increase and raise the rollers, causing the collar 56 to rotate. Attached to the collar is a link (152, Fig. 1, not shown) which acts on a transducer (150) controlling a series of resistances in each of three phase windings of the motor driving the package-drum to reduce its speed. Periodical rises and falls of the rollers correspondingly affect the rate at which the drum is driven. Adjustment of the working tension. Link 146 is adjustably connected to the sector 138, the point of connexion being chosen according to the desired degree of tension in each yarn and the number (in this case, two) of yarns teeing wound. Breakage of yarns. When one or other of the yarns break, a lever (180, Fig. 7, not shown) on the corresponding roller arm 42 moves against the actuator of a switch 54 or 54a, to complete a circuit for the solenoid 90. When the armature is thus withdrawn, the lever 84 is no longer supported and it falls on to a switch-arm 122 to light a signal lamp. The opposing torque on the collar is thus reduced by the effect of one spring, but is sufficient to maintain the tension in the remaining yarn. When both yarns break, a relay is de-energized to interrupt the current of the driving roller. A circuit by which these operations are effected is described (Fig. 9 not shown). Resetting of arm 84. When the arm 84 is in the position to which it has fallen, a boss 112 thereon is engaged and lifted by an arm 110 of a lever when the latter is rotated manually. The roller 105 engages against the under surface of the armature of the solenoid, which is inclined, so that the armature is forced back against the thrust of its spring and the roller snaps in above the armature.
