Abstract
1,128,728. Sterilizing tubular webs. TETRA PAK A.B. 12 June, 1967 [27 June, 1966; 15 Aug., 1966], No. 26946/67. Heading A5G. The interior of flexible tubular webs is sterilized by confining a portion of the tube between two spaced sets of clips or rollers which seal that portion from the remainder of the tube, filling that portion of the tube with a fluid sterilizing agent e.g. H 2 O 2 , ethylene oxide or chlorine dioxide, and causing the whole length of the tube to pass continuously or intermittently through the sterilizing zone by moving it relative to the clips or rollers. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the unsterilized tube 6a passes from the feed roll 4 between the nip of rollers 1a and 1b and thence through the nip of a similar pair of rollers 2a and 2b, the tube between the rollers being filled with a liquid sterilizing agent, the sterilized tube 6b passing on to a filling machine shown generally at 7. The rollers are contained within a tank 9 filled with a liquid 8 (which may itself be a sterilant) so that the filled portion of the tube is buoyed up and the liquid may be heated by heater 10 to heat the sterilizing liquid. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the filled portion of the tube is supported on a belt 5 which runs over the lower rollers of the nips 2a and 2b and in Fig. 3 (not shown) only one pair of rollers is used these being positioned above the feed roll of flattened tube so that the feed roll itself provides the second nip. In each case the rollers may be driven to facilitate passage of the tube and in the first two embodiments, one pair of rollers may be movable relative to the other pair to vary the intervening distance.
