Abstract

1,128,007. Making bearings ; angular bending; shearing. C. S. WHITE. 19 July, 1966 [19 July, 1965], No. 32300/66. Headings B3A, B3E and B3W. In a method of making a bearing, a blank is cut from strip with a notch at one end and a tab at the other, the centre section is then formed around a mandrel to arcuate shape, the ends are formed in succession around the mandrel to arcuate shape and the tab engages in the notch to form locking means. The strip 58 is fed into support means 56 and a punch 26 on an upper die forming assembly 22 cuts a notch 70 in the strip, which is then advanced until its leading edge abuts an adjustable stop 62. As the assembly 22 is again lowered, the punch 26 severs a blank from the strip forming a tab 74 thereon as it does so and a forming surface 24 wraps the blank about the mandrel 20 to a U- shape. Further movement of the assembly 22 drives down the mandrel with the blank and the ends 68, 74 thereof contact forming surfaces 34, 46 respectively to bend the ends inwardly. The end 68 is bent around the mandrel 20 in co-operation with a first lower forming die 30 which is at a higher level than a second die 42. The assembly 22 is lowered still further, thereby forcing down the die 30, forming the end 74 in the second die 42 and engaging the tab 74 in the notch 70. The assembly 22 is then raised, the mandrel 20 indexed axially and the process repeated so that a plurality of bearing elements (78) are formed thereon, Fig. 11 (not shown). The outer surfaces of the elements 78, while still on the mandrel, are centerless ground or otherwise machined concentric therewith. The inner surfaces of the bearing elements may be coated with a low friction organic polymeric material 80, e.g. Teflon (Trade Mark), which may be applied to the strip 58. The material is bonded by a phenolic resin which is partly cured before the forming operations are carried out and the final curing is effected while the bearing elements are on the mandrel. A spherical bearing element may be formed by shaping the blanks around spherical balls spaced on the mandrel.
