Abstract

1,127,919. Monocrystalline ferrites. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. 23 Dec., 1965 [25 Jan., 1965], No. 54654/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions H1 and H3] Monocrystalline layers of ferrites are produced by vapour phase hydrolysis of halides of the appropriate metals. The ferrite may be M<SP>1</SP>M<SP>11</SP> 2 O 4 where M<SP>1</SP> = Li, Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn or Cd, and M<SP>11</SP> = Al, Cr, Mn, Fe or Ti (Fe must be present). In Fig. 1 (not shown), He or Ar is passed over sources (11) of the halides (Cl, Br, F or I) of M<SP>1</SP> and M<SP>11</SP> heated separately by electric heaters 7. The vaporized halides react with H 2 O vapour carried by O 2 , He and Ar from 3 and the ferrite is deposited on substrate 10 of similar crystal structure. The examples relate to the production of Mn 0À3 Ni 0À55 Fe<SP>2+</SP> 0À15 Fe 2 <SP>3+</SP>O 4 from MnBr 2 , FeBr 2 and NiBr 2 , and of a similar compound from the bromides of Fe, Mg and Co. The substrate may be MgO, MgAl 2 O, Al 2 O 3 or the ferrite itself. An MgO substrate may be cut along the (100), (110), or (111) plane.
