Abstract
1,127,903. Suspension polymerization process for producing dyeable polymers. MONSANTO CO. 14 Sept., 1965 [21 Sept., 1964], No. 39171/65. Heading C3P. Dyeable vinyl polymers have attached to the ends of the polymer chains ionizable groups of formula -COOM, -OSO 3 M or -SO 3 M, where M is H, NH 4 or an alkali metal, the ionizable groups being present in a proportion of 64 microequivalents per gram of polymer, and the ratio of -COOM groups to the sum of the -OSO 3 M and -SO 3 M groups being from 0À8 to 1À5. The polymers are obtained by polymerizing at least one mono-olefinically unsaturated vinyl monomer in aqueous suspension in the presence of (a) a redox catalyst comprising an oxidizing component and an oxidizable sulphoxy activator, (b) an ammonium or alkali metal salt and (c) at least one C 8 -C 18 fatty acid or salt thereof. The vinyl monomer preferably comprises acrylonitrile, most preferably together with vinyl acetate and styrene. Ferrous ions (as ferrous sulphate) may also be included in the polymerization. The oxidizing component of catalyst (a) may be a perborate, perchlorate, persulphate or persulphuric acid; and the activator may be sulphur dioxide, sodium bisulphite, hydrosulphite or thiosulphate, a dialkyl sulphite, p-toluenesulphinio acid or formamidine sulphinic acid. The salt (b) is preferably a salt of a strong mineral acid, e.g. sodium sulphate, and component (c) may be sodium stearate. Polymerization is preferably effected at a pH of about 2. The acrylonitrilevinyl acetate-styrene copolymers are obtained in bead form and can be spun into readily dyeable fibres.
