Abstract

1,127,246. Treating grain and seeds; antiseptic and enriched feeds. THOMAS & CHARNOCK Ltd. 31 Oct., 1966 [12 Nov., 1965], No. 48265/65. Headings A2B and A2Q. in a process for treating grain, such as Dari grain (Indian millet or Guinea corn) and canary seed, and pulses, such as Maple peas and Tic beans - all hereinafter termed grain - the grain is dried in a stream of warm air, e.g. having a temperature not exceeding 25‹C., to reduce the moisture content to a desired value, e.g. 2 to 7% by weight, then mixed with an aqueous solution containing one or more enriching nutrients and/or antibiotic substances and the resulting mixture is maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure, e.g. 29 inches of vacuum, for a predetermined time, e.g. 10 to 30 minutes, so that the grain becomes impregnated with the solution. Excess solution is then drained off, and the resulting impregnated grain is dried, e.g. until its moisture content is not more than 15%. According to Example 1, Dari grain is enriched with: thiamin, nicotinic acid, choline, vitamin B 12 , riboflavine, pantothenic acid, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D 3 , DL-methionine and L-lysine monochloride, and protected by an anti-oxidant, namely butylated hydroxy-toluene. A balanced feed for racing pigeons is prepared by mixing 10%, by weight, of this enriched grain with 25% of maize, 20% of maple peas, 10% of tares and 35% of Tic beans. According to Example 2, canary seed is treated with the substances mentioned in Example 1 including vitamin K 3 . The treated canary seed may be mixed with an equal amount of millet seed, to provide a balanced feed for cage-birds. According to Example 3, Dari grain is treated with chlortetracycline hydrochloride or aureomycin. The treated Dari grain may be included in feeds for birds in quarantine, to minimize the risk of psittacosis or ornithocosis being transmitted to human beings.
