Abstract
112,677. Robinson, J. V. Jan. 23, 1917. Couplings, disconnectible. - An automatic train-pipe connector is formed with specially shaped engaging members comprising a head A from which project diagonally arranged " spiral " shaped prongs 11 which are flat and parallel to about the points 12, Fig. 4, and from there curve outwardly slowly to the points 13 and thence rapidly to the extremities 14. A portion 10 of each flat face is raised and mates with a vertical rearward extension 8 on the opposing member. At the point 19, Fig. 2, the prongs are provided with a lateral shoulder lying entirely in the horizontal plane and extending forwardly of the head A and at rightangles thereto for mating with correspondingly shaped shoulders 20, Figs. 4 and 7, extending rearwardly in the horizontal plane. The head A is fixed on a yieldingly mounted support B, comprising a body 22 slotted at 23 and 24 and provided with one or more curved fluid conduits 25. The support B is mounted on a two-piece base C attached to a member 5, being held thereto by a forwardly projecting adjustable spring D which bears against projections 26 on the body 22, the lower projection 26 being preferably shorter than the upper to counterbalance the weight of the head A. Lateral and vertical play of the head A are allowed by mounting the body 22 on a pin journaled in a semicircular bearing 40, Fig. 4, and a horizontal pivot 36 turning in bearings 34. The pivot 36 lies in the flared-out slot 23, so preventing undue rotation of the head A from its uncoupled position and allowing slight rotation in the coupled position. The means for connecting the hose 49 to the conduit 25 comprises a male screw member 43 screwed into the conduit and provided with oppositely disposed lugs 46 adapted to interlock behind complementary lugs 47 of a female member 48 carried by the hose 49. A groove 50 for receiving a U- shaped gasket 51 is provided in the member 48. A dummy or interchange coupling E is provided for connecting the hose 49 to the hose 53 of a car not equipped with the automatic device.
