[Also in Division G6] Light or heavy water used as a moderator in a nuclear reactor is purified by adding a strong acid to dissolve suspended aluminium compound and then contacting the solution with anionic and cationic ion exchangers. A suitable strong acid is hydrofluoric acid or phosphoric acid. When heavy water moderator is treated, the acid may be formed by mixing a solution of sodium fluoride in heavy water with the moderator, passing the mixture through a deuterated cationic exchanger, and heating for a short period before passing the solution through a mixed bed of deuterated anionic and cationic exchange resins. Alternatively, a solution of the salt in heavy water may first be passed through the cationic exchanger to form the acid and then added to the heavy water moderator.
