Lenses, grinding and polishing.-In a machine of the type in which a revolving grinding or polishing tool and a revolving work-holder are moved relatively to one another, the axis of the tool being at right-angles to the path of the relative move. ment, and the work-holder is mounted on a pivoted carriage that is moved about its pivot by and is connected to a worm wheel, the work-holder I is carried in a bearing J sliding on a carriage N mounted on the worm wheel 0 and is driven by a flexible shaft K and universal joint K'. The worm which drives the worm wheel 0 is carried in an eccentric bearing Q, and can be moved by a handle against the action of a spring to carry the worm out of gear with the worm wheel. To grind a convex lens, the anglepiece G is moved to the other side of the centre of the worm wheel O.
