Apparatus for holding a last e.g. in a lasting machine, consists of a carriage 1 having a last pin 2 and a toe support 37 which is automatically moved to its correct position according to the size of the last when the carriage 1 is moved in the machine. The last pin 2 is slidable heightwise in the carriage 1, its position being adjusted by a transversely sliding wedge 3 which can be locked in position by a pawl 24 engaging a rachet on the wedge 3. The toe support 37 is slideable heightwise in a slide 34 which can move lengthwise of the shoe along guides 32 on the carriage. The lower end of the toe support 37 rests on an inclined surface 33 so that as the slide 34 and toe support are moved lengthwise of the shoe the toe support 37 moves to its correct heightwise position. The carriage 1 can be moved lengthwise in the machine by bolt 43 which is fixed relative to the machine and which is screwed into the carriage. The bolt 43 is rotated until a shoe part e.g. the heel end of the last, is correctly positioned in the machine. The lower end of a pinion 36 mounted in the carriage 1 meshes with a rack 42 fixed with respect to the bolt 43 so that movement of the carriage 1 causes rotation of the pinion 36. The upper end of the pinion 36 meshes with rack teeth on the edge of the slide 34, rotation of the pinion 36 causing lengthwise movement of the slide 34. The gear ratio between the rack 42, pinion 36 and slide 34 is 2:1 so that movement of the carriage 1 by the bolt 43 causes a twofold movement of the slide 34, thus moving the toe support 37 to its correct position according to the size of the last. The apparatus also includes a heel mould 15 which is carried by arms 13 having slots 13<SP>1</SP> which co-operate with pins 12 on the carriage 1. Rollers 17 on the arms 13 engage a cam slide 9, movement of the cam slide causing the heel mould 15 to move forwardly until it engages the heel end of the last and then causing the arms 13 to move inwardly to clamp the heel mould 15 about the last. The cam slide 9 is moved by a lever 6 which is actuated by a cam 22 on a shaft 21 which is rotated by a crank 27, 28. Rotation of the shaft 21 also causes a pin 23 to move out of engagement with the pawl 24 so that the last pin is locked in position and also rotates a hollow nut 26. The nut 26 is screwed into a slide 30 having wedges which co-operate with wedges on the inclined surface 33 so that rotation of the nut 26 causes heightwise movement of the surface 33. This causes the toe rest 37 to move heightwise and clamp the last against an insole rest 38 which is pivoted to the slide 34. A side gauge 40 is also secured to the slide 34.
